The Art of Spanish Craftsmanship

Spanning generations of skilled artisans, Spain’s legacy of making fine sheepskin and leather coats has been celebrated for centuries.

The Best Raw Materials

Spain’s reputation for leather and shearling runs centuries deep, rooted in family workshops where the craft is instilled in their lineage. At the sheepskin production plant in Burgos that supplies Overland, roughly 20,000 of Spain’s most coveted hides are processed each day. Experienced workers sort through every skin, grading by quality and size before treating them through either drying or salting, methods thoughtfully chosen to suit their final purpose.

The leathers and shearlings chosen for Overland reflect our highest standards. Naturally insulating and luxuriously soft, these materials are selected for their texture, density, and hue. Toscana shearling offers exceptional warmth with lightweight comfort, while Merino sheepskin is prized for its velvety hand and resilient strength.

The Next Steps

From Burgos, the skins continue to Barcelona for tanning, where their texture is refined and unique colorations developed. The sheepskins are dyed in large rotating drums, then hung individually to dry. Once dry, they are sheared and ironed in a stage that, although supported by advanced machinery, still relies on the steady guidance of practiced hands to achieve the perfect result.

Different varieties of sheepskin demand distinct temperatures during pressing. Thicker Merinos can withstand higher heat, while lighter Toscanas require a gentler touch. After ironing, Merino sheepskins undergo a final shearing to achieve a uniform, velvety finish. The smooth side is then polished to a soft sheen, pigmented, and pressed once more, a final refining step that enhances depth and suppleness before the hides are transformed into a coat.

Where It All Comes Together

In Madrid, expert artisans bring the journey full circle. Inside a century-old workshop, dozens of skilled workers focus on individual tasks during the creation process. Some cut patterns from supple hides, while others align panels for tone and texture, ensuring harmony across every piece. In other parts of the factory, craftspeople guide seams through whirring needles, their movements honed through decades of experience.

While technology lends efficiency, it is the human touch that gives each coat its soul. Every garment is inspected, trimmed, and shaped with an attention to detail that no machine can replicate. In Madrid, the sheepskins that began in Burgos and Barcelona are transformed, stitched, sculpted, and finished into enduring expressions of Spanish artistry, created exclusively for Overland’s discerning customers.
