I got lucky.

I returned the size 40 boots because they were too big. At the time that I returned the boots, there were no size 39 boots to try. I checked back later and I was thrilled to see there was a size 39 back in stock. They are very comfortable. I wear a size 8.5 shoe and a size 9 in athletic shoes or boots with thicker socks.

Sadly, I had to return the boots

I love everything about these boots except for the sizing. I typically wear a size 8.5 in a shoe and a size 9 in a boot or athletic shoe with thicker socks. I ordered the boots in a EU 40, which is comparable to a US size 9-9.5. There was too much roominess and my heels slipped up and down when I walked in them. Since it's the end of the season, I am most likely out of luck on being able to exchange them for a size 39.
